3 Days In New York City

NYC is filled with people, food, and many many sites to see! It is sometimes hard to narrow it down to what is worth seeing. If you only have a short amount of time, it is difficult to cram everything in without exhausting yourself.

NYC is a great destination to explore during any season; the summer and Christmas seasons are more popular. So if you want to avoid some crowds go during the off-season. In this 3-day itinerary, we will give you tips on top places to explore, the best show to see, and awesome shopping spots! After reading this blog, you will have a complete guide for the perfect weekend in NYC!

Day 1 In NYC

Long story short, we picked the perfect weekend to go to NYC during a huge Nor’ Easter storm! Our flights had been canceled and we were the last train in…but that is for another blog. Due to this massive storm, we had to change our plans around a bit, so we could stay indoors the first day. This is a 3-day itinerary; however, you can switch around the days to match your preference.

Shopping

If you are into shopping NYC is the place to be! You have 5th Avenue filled with many other wonderful stores. My husband is a huge basketball fan, so we had to stop by the NBA store. The 3-story shop was so fun to walk around in! Our next stop was the Nintendo store! We are huge video game nerds. It was so fun to see the old gaming systems on display! Last, but not least, we had to check out the M&M store! 3 floors of chocolatey goodness! They even had a goodie bag you could fill with all your favorite M&Ms!

Broadway Show

I am obsessed with Broadway (or any musical for that matter). It has always been a dream to see a show on Broadway, so this was high on our list. We got to see the magnificent Wicked. It was incredible! The actors, the singers, the thrill! It was such a great experience!

  • $89 each for the top balcony section
  • During the week there are 8 pm showings; on Saturday there are 2 pm and 8 pm
Broadway Musical - Wicked, make sure you add seeing this play to your NYC to-do list!

Day 2 In NYC

On day two we woke up early to beat the crowds and to make sure we had enough time to see everything. I would highly recommend buying tickets in advance for most attractions, due to their popularity. You don’t want to spend the whole weekend standing in a line. We also had better weather too! The clouds had completely cleared, we just had to brave the wind! 🙂

Statue Of Liberty

There are so many iconic sites to see in NYC, but this is one we have both wanted to see. It gives you a sense of American pride when you first see her up close. We booked a ticket ($18 per person) in advance because we heard they fill up fast. Good thing we did, we overheard someone say the tickets to go to the Crown were booked for the next six months! It was a little bit of a hassle to get to the Statue; wait in a line to get onto a ferry, and go through security to get on that ferry. It is a quick ride to get to the island, and we were the first ferry over (got in the first line at 9 am), so we got some great shots!

Our ticket included a visit to Ellis Island. It was another short ferry ride over (no security this time). That building is huge, and it is crazy to think that many immigrants passed through, on their way to make a better life for themselves in America.

9/11 Memorial and Museum

A quick walk from the ferry dock is the 9/11 Memorial. It is a sobering place to visit. They have such beautiful memorials for where the twin towers stood. There is a tree there that still stood after the towers had fallen. The museum is $24 per person and opens from 9 am-5 pm. There was a bit of a line to get in, so if possible, I would recommend booking tickets in advance.

Day 3 In NYC

Our last day in NYC was pretty chill. We enjoyed the morning sleeping in at our hotel, enjoying a quick breakfast in a local cafe, and then headed to our first destination!

Empire State Building

Of course, this is the most iconic building you can visit in New York, and it was on top of our list! Located right in the heart of Manhattan. You can grab your tickets and head straight up! Of course, there is security you must get through. The views are stunning at the top!

  • $37 per person

Top Of The Rock

We wanted to try a skyscraper at night and chose the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center)! As soon as you walk in, you can purchase tickets. They give you a certain time to start lining up for the elevator. While we waited, we explored the huge underground mall and were able to watch some ice skating as well. There is security as you make your way to the top, but it goes by very quickly. Of course, you forget about the wait and lines, as soon as you see the view!

  • $30 per person

Times Square

Our hotel was located right next to Times Square (both a blessing and a curse, due to the noise at night). But we were able to enjoy the abundance of lights and the chaos of Times Square.

Big cities can be so overwhelming, especially when one is short of time. If I had to pick just one thing to do while in NYC, it would love be to catch a Broadway show. I would roam the back streets in search of hidden gems.

Such a fun city to visit. I’m glad you guys were able to make the best of it despite the storm. I’m headed back to NYC this December and can’t wait. I’ve never been to Top of the Rock, so thanks for reminding me to add that to my itinerary!

This is a very comprehensive guide to NYC. I have never been to US before but I always have NY and Niagara falls on top of my bucket list.

Seems like you did all the biggies despite being confined indoors on the first day. NYC is one of my favorite places in the world. I would love to go back and visit all these places again. Your itinerary is perfect for someone who is visiting NYC for the first time.

Wicked is one of my favorite musicals! I haven’t seen it in NYC, but I would love to experience my favorite show there. It looks like the pair of you had a lovely excursion to Lady Liberty as well!

What a great itinerary! Love that you got all the must-sees down into just three days; NYC is perfect for a long weekend for anyone who lives east of the Mississippi and north of Georgia. That’s too bad about the storm but based on your pictures you still got 2/3 days of clear skies!
