Ultimate New England Road Trip Itinerary

One of my favorite places in the world to travel to in the summer and fall is New England! The cool summers make July and August bearable in the USA and the Fall colors are just stunning to see if you can make it here during those peak months. New England is the collective states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. Sam and I took an awesome road trip through these states and had the most wonderful time! If you are planning a road trip or want to explore these states I will tell you everything you need to know!

Connecticut

Connecticut was our first stop on our New England Road Trip. This state has so much to offer. Beautiful gardens, historical homes, and stunning beaches. Although we only explored a small part, I have to say it is one of my favorite states!

Hammonasset Beach State Park

Hammonasset Beach is a beautiful state park on the coast. It is two miles of beachfront located on the Long Island Sound. It is one of the state’s most popular parks having around 1 million visitors every year. The facilities include picnic areas (and some concessions), camping grounds, as well as a bike trail, and a stunning back front. Daily parking fee for non-residents of Connecticut.

Harkness Memorial State Park

Another beautiful state park to visit is Harkness Memorial. This hidden gem is a historical preservation area with stunning grounds and a beachfront. The state park’s main attraction is Eolia, a 42-room Renaissance Revival mansion with beautiful gardens and greenhouses. Daily parking fee for non-residents.

Rhode Island

Newport Rhode Island is such a perfect destination to spend the weekend. From delicious seafood restaurants, beautiful sailing tours, and not to mention the perfect shops around town. Newport has something for everyone. Check out Bowen’s Wharf – a terrific spot for dining and fantastic views!

The Breakers

The Breaker’s is Rhode Island’s most famous mansion. Built between 1893 and 1895 it was used as a summer residence for Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The Breakers is also one of the oldest of the “cottages” and one of the biggest. Visit this stunning home and explore the stunning 70-plus rooms. Enjoy an afternoon snack at the Garden Cafe inside the Welcome Center. Tickets can be purchased online and at the entrance. (If you are visiting during peak summer hours, I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance).

Marble House

The Marble House is another stunning mansion to visit when you are visiting Rhode Island. It was built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. The younger brother of Cornelius II, who built The Breakers. Vanderbilt’s fortune came from their Grandfather who was involved in the steamships and the New York Central Railroad.

The easiest way to visit these houses is to take the historical Yellow Line trolley. Leave your car and purchase an all-day pass to ride RIPTA. This route will start at the Newport Visitor Center and will take you to each mansion. There is also parking available across from the Marble House. I highly recommend getting there early so you can have the houses to yourself!

Massachusetts

Massachusetts is everything I imagined. Epic coastlines, bustling cities, and the most amazing coastal towns! If you are a foodie, like me, you will also have the most delicious seafood you have ever had!

The top two places I recommend stopping at are Plymouth and Salem. In Plymouth, you can visit a recreation of a 17th-century pilgrim village, see Plymouth Rock, and climb onboard a replica of the Mayflower. In Salem stop by the Salem Pioneer village used as a filming location in Disney’s Hocus Pocus! Also, don’t miss the historical museums and learn about the Salem Witch Trials!

Boston

The vibe in Boston is buzzing, fast-paced, yet relaxing. You can find yourself walking down the street in the middle of hopping shops and restaurants. On the other hand, find yourself relaxing in one of the many parks in Boston. Whatever your interest, Boston has it all! If you want to know more about just Boston. Gloucester

Gloucester is the oldest seaport in the US. It is also home to the fisherman featured on National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna. Spend a day or two exploring the local docks and even book a whale-watching tour! Sam and I stayed a few extra days here. If you want to know more about what we did. Click here!

New Hampshire

Although we visited in the summer, I can just imagine what New Hampshire (and all of New England) looks like in the Fall. The entire state is just one beautiful mountain range after the other! Filled with plenty of moose crossing signs!

Mount Washington

One thing you cannot miss while visiting New Hampshire is ascending Mount Washington. It is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States and it has some of the most amazing views you have ever seen! To get to the peak, there is the option to drive or ride the train. Be prepared Mount Washington boasts of having the worst weather. Expect heavy winds! Tickets for the Cog Railway are around $50 per person. If you plan on driving you will pay a fee of $39 per vehicle.

Vermont

Although I loved every state we visited in New England, Vermont is one of the prettiest states to drive through (in my opinion). Dairy farms and the countryside are what you can expect when visiting this state.

Bragg Farm Sugar House – One thing Vermont is famous for is maple syrup. If you are looking for a sweet treat, stop by Bragg Sugarhouse for a tour of the sugar house, a syrup tasting, and even a maple ice cream cone!

Morse Farm – Another great maple farm to visit is Morse Farm. From maple kettle corn to maple seasonings you will not leave the store empty-handed!
