Biscayne National Park Travel Guide

Biscayne National Park is the largest marine park in the state of Florida, US. And is 95% underwater. The islands and reefs of Biscayne National Park now enjoy protected land off the southeastern Florida coast. SCOBA divers and snorkelers will explore the world’s third-largest coral reef system and the Park’s many accessible shipwrecks. Learn what there is to see and do in this park and how to get to Biscayne.

Where To Find It

Biscayne National Park encompasses coral reefs, islands, and shoreline mangrove forests in the northern Florida Keys. Its reefs and islands are accessible only by boat. Dolphins, turtles, and pelicans live in Biscayne Bay Lagoon. The underwater Maritime Heritage Trail links dive sites, most are shipwrecks. On Boca Chita Key, Boca Chita Lighthouse has coastal views. A museum at Convoy Point explains local ecosystems.

Because the Park is 95% underwater, the land-based activities are based near the visitor center or the Keys. Including the Elliott Key, Boca Chita, and Key Largo. There is no direct entrance fee, however, you will pay for the boat ride over or for a permit to dock on the island.

Where To Stay

There are no lodging places directly in the park. However, the closest and largest city near Biscayne is Miami. Choose from countless hotels and resorts. Another, slightly smaller city close to the park in Homestead.

There are two options for camping inside the park. No reservations may be made in advance for these campgrounds; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

$25 per night including tent site and boat docking. Fees must be paid in cash and with exact change, at the kiosk at the harborfront. Tenting fees are for a maximum of six people and two tents. Camping and marina use fees are due daily upon arrival or no later than the official sunset.

Boca Chita Key is the park’s most popular island. It features beautiful waterfront views, a grassy camping area, picnic tables, and grills. Toilets are available, but there are no showers, sinks, or drinking water. The harbor entrance at low tide is approximately four feet.

Elliott Key is the park’s largest island. Restrooms with sinks and cold water showers, picnic tables, and grills are available. Drinking water is available, but bring water as a precaution if the system goes down. Elliott Key harbor is approximately 2 ½ feet at low tide. There are 33 boat slips in the marina.

Where To Eat

There are no locations to buy food at this park. So, I highly suggest bringing a picnic lunch and water with you as you explore Biscayne National Park. If you plan on taking a boat tour to the islands, snorkeling, or scuba you will want a snack after a day on the water.

Of course, if you are on a boat or in the water you will have a lot of sun exposure. I highly recommend bringing along the water to keep you hydrated throughout the day. It is so important to have extra water on hand in case of any emergency. I love my Hydro Flask. It keeps my water cool and sometimes the ice doesn’t even melt until the end of the day!

Climate and Best Time To Go

Biscayne National Park is in Southern Florida, and in a subtropical climate, which means sunshine year-round. Winters are normally dry and mild, with occasional fronts bringing wind and little rain. Summer brings hot and humid weather with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoons. The average high temperature in January is 77 Fahrenheit and in August, 90 degrees. Hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30.

Bucket List Activities

Because this park is 95% underwater, there aren’t many activities you can do without including it.

If you do not want to get directly into the water. Cruise out on a tour to one of the popular islands at Boca Chita Key. Visit the lighthouse, walk the historical trail, or spend the day grilling by the water. (And if you are brave enough, stay the night). The ride out to the island was a smooth one, but if you tend to get seasick don’t hesitate to take a Dramamine.

If you are wanting more water-related activities consider Snorkel or SCUBA at one of the many stunning coral reefs. Including Maritime Heritage Trail, Jones Lagoon, or the Mandalay Wreck.

Instagram Worthy Spots

Although, not directly part of the park, stop by the Deering Estate. This beautiful estate is located right off the Bay with stunning views of the water. Filled with photo opportunities around every corner, you may even spot a manatee in the bay!

Another great photo opportunity is the island of Boca Chita! This stunning island on the Keys is just perfect for those Insta pics! Take advantage of the historical lighthouse and all the tropical palm trees and get that shot!

Bonus Travel Tips

Hat and Sunglasses- these will keep the sun off your face and out of your eyes. Making your outdoor adventures must more enjoyable. Here is the hat I wore on our Florida trip!

Sunscreen – no one likes to get sunburned on their weekend getaways. Apply sunscreen in the morning and be sure to reapply if needed. This is my favorite kind.

Aloe – in case you do miss a spot with your sunscreen bring aloe to soothe those burns.

Is it worth visiting this park? I would highly recommend this park! It is perfect if you want to enjoy a day out on the water and experience some epic views and scenery. You can do this park in just 1 day, on a boat tour or shuttle out to Boca Chita Key. A perfect day trip from Miami.
