Best Spots To Enjoy The Summer Sun

There are warm places all over the world! How do you like to spend your summer? With your toes in the sand soaking in the sun’s rays? Posting your ultimate vacation on Insta? Here are the best spots to enjoy the summer sun!

California, USA

San Diego is sunny 95% of the year, so you can truly enjoy this beautiful city all year round. But if you are looking for the sunniest, warm days to visit San Diego, you should visit San Diego in the summer and enjoy all of the different San Diego sunny activities!

There is so much to do in San Diego! from beautiful beaches, spoiling hotels and hotel pools, hikes, city adventures, and beautiful nature spots!

If you are visiting over the spring-summer, I highly recommend staying at a nice hotel with an even nicer outdoor pool to enjoy the warm weather and have a great time at the beautiful hotel pools.

But there are so many other outdoor adventures to go on besides the spoiling outdoor hotel pools!

Here are some of my favorites:

One of the most popular San Diego activities is whale watching in Mission Bay, seals watching in La Jolla, kayaking in La Jolla, visiting the sunset cliffs, hiking Torrey Pines State Park, and more!

As mentioned, San Diego has some beautiful beaches to enjoy the warm summer sun. My favorite beaches are La Jolla Cove beach, Coronado Beach, La Jolla Shores Beach, and South Mission Beach!

After ending your fun, warm day in San Diego, you would like to know that San Diego has some of the best sunset spots in California!

I love watching the sunset at Sunset Cliffs, at the Ocean Beach Pier, and at Torrey Pines!

California USA

Down in Southern California is Oceanside, a quintessential small town that has been a vacation favorite since the 1800s. One of the reasons that the town is popular is because of its ultra-wide beach and huge waves that are perfect for surfing.

All summer long surfers dot the water waiting to catch a wave and numerous surf schools run workshops for kids and not-so-young novices so they can learn the water sport. Surfers are gathered around the pier which is the state’s longest wooden pier. In other areas, people can swim and splash in the water to get away from the summer heat.

After a day at the beach, Downtown Oceanside is perfect for a happy hour drink or dinner at many of its cafes and restaurants. Every Thursday there is a farmer’s market in the morning and a sunset market where visitors can choose from treats to try and enjoy live music. The California Surfing Museum is also downtown and worth a visit to learn more about the history of the sport.

Nearby is Legoland with its rides and amazing Lego sculptures. There is also a Legoland water park for those that want a different kind of water fun. And hikers can enjoy walks through wetlands and grasslands in area parks for a dose of nature and fresh air.

British Columbia Canada

The Okanagan Valley, in the interior of British Columbia, is a popular Canadian vacation destination known for its toasty summer sun. You can expect dry and hot temperatures near 30 degrees C and for the temperature to rise even hotter during heatwaves.

The largest in a chain of ancient fjord lakes, Okanagan Lake is 135 kilometers long and is 232 meters at its deepest point. The lake provides a huge playground for the seemingly endless variety of watersports available. Experience an adrenaline rush as you learn to flyboard, fly through the sky for a parasailing adventure, or rent a Sea-Doo jet ski to rip around.

The Okanagan Valley is the place to be for summer exploration in British Columbia with its water sports, wine tasting, beaches, the best fresh fruit in Canada, and hiking opportunities. Take a bike ride along the historic Kettle Valley Rail Trail (starting at Myra Canyon), cuddle a Joey at The Kangaroo Creek Farm, or float down a lazy river.

With so many amazing areas to explore in the Okanagan Valley, the choices for fun are endless. A great location to base yourself is Kelowna, where you can also explore the popular surrounding areas of Peachland, Summerland, Penticton, and the well-known resorts of Silver Star and Big White.

Los Cabos Mexico

You may not think of going to Mexico because of the scorching summer heat (and the fact that we experience great summer weather in the US) but Los Cabos is different from the rest of the country. Since it’s located in the Baja California peninsula, it has different weather than mainland Mexico, almost as if you are in Los Angeles during the summer.

The only difference (and one of the most important when traveling) is that you pay a cheaper price than the US when you spend your summer in Los Cabos. I’ve been living in Cabo since the summer of 2021 and never thought I’d survive the heat. I learned that it was different from the time I was living in Puerto Vallarta (humid, sticky summers). The beaches are very accessible and the water is more clear than the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

You can do all the water activities you can think of – from kayaking to the arch or spending a full day on a yacht. Los Cabos is also friendly to any type of traveler be it tourists, family travelers with kids, couples, groups of friends – you name it! Some destinations can be really pricy during the summer but Los Cabos (even though it’s the most expensive in Mexico) is still cheaper than the US and Europe.

Guatemala

Nestled in the heart of Central America is Guatemala, a country that boasts dense jungle, some of the oldest Mayan ruins known to man, serene lakes; and is still – somehow – relatively unspoiled by tourism traffic. It’s here, amidst the bustling city streets of Guatemala City, the ancient civilizations of Tikal, or the holistic properties of mystic Lake Atitlan…that you’ll find no better place to enjoy the summer sun. Be it as a solo trip, a girls summer getaway, a romantic couples destination, or simply the next great adventure, Guatemala offers something for everyone.

Consider a stay in Antigua, a colorful city brimming with colonial architecture, heavenly authentic Guatemalan cuisine, and great proximity to the surrounding volcanoes (each of which makes for a day trip you’ll never forget, as you roast marshmallows over active hotspots!). If it’s more of a secluded, natural vibe you’re after, tour to Panajachel and travel by lancha (water taxi) as the locals do, stopping in at any one of the neighboring hillside villages. Take in some sunrise yoga, cliff dive at the lush Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve, or wander the street markets for the best deals!

Guatemala won’t stay a hidden gem forever (how could it?!), so ensure you have the chance to witness it in all of its non-commercialized glory. After all, a trip here is a trip of a lifetime!

Cyprus

If you are looking for a great place to visit with plenty of sunshine, look no further than Cyprus. Due to the Mediterranean climate, it has long dry summers which makes it one of the best spots to enjoy great weather. The sea temperature can reach 27° C in August and the sun is shining for nearly 12 hours.

The blue sky and crystal clear water make exploring the island an amazing experience. You can visit incredible Sea Caves Ayia Napa or relax at one of the most beautiful beaches such as Aphrodite’s Rock or Nissi Beach. Whether you want to visit archeological sites or admire rock formations, this island has plenty to offer for everyone.

One of the best things to do in Cyprus is explore Cape Greco Nature Reserve. Near Ayioi Anargiroi Church you will find a hidden cave. You can also swim in the turquoise waters of Cape Greco. On the other hand, if you want to swim with turtles, visit Paphos or Lara beach.

Cyprus has one of the cleanest beaches in the world so don’t miss out on visiting Akamas Peninsula National Park where you can swim in Blue Lagoon or Monolis Bay. The best way to get there is to book a boat tour which will also allow you to admire the island from the sea.

Dubrovnik Croatia

Dubrovnik is located in Croatia, on the banks of the Adriatic Sea, which makes it one of the best spots where to enjoy the summer sun. It’s hot, has a lot of history, culture, and food to explore, and offers many beaches where you can cool off. There are many great things to do in Dubrovnik so that your vacation is not just sunbathing on a beach and enjoying an all-inclusive hotel.

Best known for its Old Town, the city is an amazing destination for curious travelers. In a span of a few hours, it’s possible to see amazing architecture, learn about history, and even walk around the Old Town on the city walls.

If you are a Game Of Thrones fan, it’s possible to book a walking tour to see many of the sports where the series was filmed in Dubrovnik. This is a fun way to learn about the historic parts of Dubrovnik and at the same time enjoy the modern culture.

Another popular thing to do in Dubrovnik is to take a Dubrovnik cable car and ascend to Mount Srđ. This is the best spot from where to soak in the panoramic views of the city below and the sea surrounding it.

 Malaga Spain

Malaga is a fantastic destination for a summer holiday. The city doesn’t only offer great beaches but also plenty of culture, interesting sights to visit and some great food. Malaga is very easy to reach from every corner of Europe, its airport being the gateway to Costa del Sol. You can easily get from the airport to the city center in about 10 minutes, by train.

The beaches in Malaga are famous all over the world because of their high quality and all the facilities they offer: lifeguard watch, playgrounds for children, water sports, and miles of golden sand. There are many sightseeing boats leaving hourly from Malaga harbor, in summer, searching for dolphins. The touristic harbor is also dotted with great restaurants, including a Michelin star one, where you can enjoy good food with a view.

Malaga is also a cultural city. This is where Pablo Picasso was born, and where you can visit not just one, but two museums dedicated to his life and work. Malaga also has a fantastic historical heritage, from when it used to be part of the Al Andalus Empire. The Alcazaba located on the highest hill in town is one of the best-preserved in Andalucia and offers gorgeous views over the city and the mountains surrounding it. At the foothill of the Alcazaba you will find the ruins of the Roman theatre, which is a testament of one of the first inhabitants of this land. In summer, if you are lucky, you can catch a performance here.

Algarve Portugal

Algarve is a wonderful spot to enjoy warm and sunny summer days. There are flights to Algarve’s capital Faro. You can easily get from Faro to Albufeira or Portimao by public transport, which are the biggest resort towns on the coast. There you will find all the activities you want from boat trips to exploring the astounding beaches and caves that hide along the coast or taking surf classes.

If you want a more quiet vacation, head to Tavira or Olhao where you are at the doorstep of Ria Formosa Natural Park. Take a boat trip to the amazing islands hiding long, sand-blown beaches and a unique ecosystem. Especially interesting is the anchor cemetery in Tavira Island.

For something in the middle, head to Lagos. This is a favorite among backpackers and surfers with amazing beaches and a short trip to Ponta da Piedade and the most western point, Sagres, where not only the cliffs are jaw-droppingly beautiful, but the surf is always on.

Make sure you make it to the most famous landmark in Portugal, Benagil Sea Cave. The cave is only reached by sea. You can either get on a boat trip, but then you can’t enter the cave, or you can rent a kayak or paddleboard which gives you the opportunity to enter the cave and hang out on the beach lit up by the large sinkhole in the cave’s ceiling.

Algarve is surely a heaven for all things water sports!

Lugano Switzerland

For some gorgeous summer sun in Switzerland, head to the beautiful location of Lugano. Located in the Southern canton Ticino, Lugano is the perfect place to be to soak in some sun next to the lake. Average temperatures in the summer such as in August are 28°c but can totally get hotter!

As well as enjoying time shopping in the car-free center, find yourself walking along the promenade next to Lake Lugano. Here you can walk all the way along the water’s edge from the base of Monte San Salvatore to Monte Bre.

Both of these mountains are also reachable by local funiculars to the top, providing stunning views of Lugano from above. You can hike many routes around each mountain or back down to the bottom if you wish. Perfect for those who like exploring outside and are not afraid of heights.

Port Cros Island France

Port Cros Island is one of the best destinations in France to enjoy the summer sun. Indeed, it is sunny every day in July and August in Port Cros, and maximum temperatures are close to 30°C.

Pristine islands close to the continent in the Mediterranean Sea are rare. It only takes 30 to 60 minutes to reach Port Cros from the mainland on a ferry boat. No cars or bikes are allowed on the island, which was recognized as a national park in 1963. No need to say, you should bring good shoes with your swimmers and towels to explore all that the island can offer, but also your snorkel gear!

There are short and long hiking trails to enjoy the island, its lovely beaches, and untouched nature. The South Beach (plage du Sud) is the easiest to access.

On your way, you stop at La Fausse Monnaie to refresh and snorkel.

If you like snorkelling, then Palud Beach (plage de la Palud) is a must-do. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes on a scenic trail to reach the beautiful small cove with lovely rocks in the middle. They have installed underwater signs to create a snorkeling trail to explore Europe’s oldest marine park and learn more about its biodiversity. You may spend hours in the warm water looking at the school of fish enjoying this protected zone.

Those who like hiking may want to push to the splendid Port-Man and its pebble beach; as it’s a two-hour walk you’ll definitely leave the crowd behind.

Food and shops can only be found near the port. The rest of the island is wild, so you should prepare accordingly.

It’s good to stay at least one night in Port Cros to take your time, but day trips from Hyeres or Le Lavandou using the shuttle boat are easy to organize too.
