Transportation

Getting around London can seem overwhelming at first. But once you understand the different types of transportation, it will be easy! There are a few different ways to get around this dense and lively city.

Walk

Obviously, the cheapest way to get around London is by walking. London is a walking city, so there is no shortage of sidewalks. Just be careful when crossing the roads and if you are feeling brave, follow the locals.

Bus

Across London, you will see the iconic double-decker red buses. These are not only for tourist attractions but also for local commutes and transportation. To be honest, it takes a little practice in getting down the correct route to take. I have not fully mastered the buses, but the locals are always willing to assist if needed.

Tube

The subway – more commonly referred to as The Tube is another great way to get around the city. First, you need to buy a ticket. Depending on how much you will use the Tube, get a single fare ticket or oyster card. I find that the oyster card is the easiest to get. Buy the card for $6 and top it off as you go (this card also works on buses as well). I use the Tube Map app to find the quickest routes. And remember to Mind the Gap!

Taxi

If you don’t feel comfortable taking a bus or the Tube, take a taxi! You will see them driving all over London. Similar to most places if the light is on, it is available and all you need to do is wave it down!

Train

If you are heading further out of the city, you may take a train. Paddington is the most popular train station. From there you can travel to Windsor, down to the coast, or even to Wales or Scotland! Check out tickets here.

Currency

In England, the British Pound is used. You can exchange cash at any airport or at booths in any touristy area. It’s always a good idea to carry some cash; however, most restaurants, shops, and popular attractions will accept a credit card.

Weather/Best Time to Go

England can be rainy, there is no denying that. So, when would be the best time to go to avoid the wettest season so you can enjoy those rare sunny days in London?

Spring

March-May: Spring is a great time to visit England, the flowers will be starting to bloom, and the warm weather will be setting in. I do recommend visiting in late spring, closer to May. If you go too early, you will be caught in many spring showers.

Summer

June-August: Summer is another excellent time to explore London. The weather is fantastic, although it can get quite warm in places that don’t have AC (not many Airbnbs and museums do). June would be the better month to visit, experience the warm weather, not too many rain showers, and sight-see before all the summer crowds show up.

Fall

September-November: There is a chill in the air, and it is never fun to walk around in the chilly rain. Fall is a great time to see the turning leaves but be sure to bring your warm jacket!

Winter

December-February: Although it can be chilly to walk around London town and it does get dark quite early. December is a great month to visit! The Christmas markets are in full swing – walk down Piccadilly to see all the wonderful Christmas lights and stop by Hamley’s toy store for some last-minute gift shopping.

Where to Stay

While there are many wonderful places to stay in London, it can get expensive. There are many B&B options available. If you don’t feel comfortable in a shared bathroom environment another option would be Hiltons – we use the Hilton Honors credit card and build up points for cheap to free stays! These are the best Hiltons to stay at in London:

Tower of London – DoubleTree by Hilton London

West End – DoubleTree by Hilton London

Where to Eat

There are so many wonderful and delicious places to eat in London, I have written a completely separate blog on the subject: Check it out here!

What to Pack

I have a full packing guide for England, here, but these are a few “must-haves” for your trip!

  • Luggage – The suitcase I use most is the Away Carry-On or Away Medium. I have been able to pack a few weeks’ worth of clothes in this suitcase.
  • Rain Jacket – it is wise to have a rain jacket with you for those sporadic showers throughout the day
  • Layers – I will forever preach the power of layers! A light jacket for the cool mornings and evenings can easily be taken off for the warmer afternoons.
  • Hand sanitizer – your hands can get grimy from walking around the city
  • Remember to bring your adapter if you are outside the UK. I love this one – it works well with my curling iron too!
  • Headphones for the flight or a good book
  • All the essential toiletries
  • Don’t forget your passport!
  • Don’t bother with an umbrella, the wind is too strong and won’t be worth it
  • Passport case (Here is one I use, I can fit my ID, credit cards, and cash)

Itineraries

I have built a few different itineraries for you, depending on how long you plan to stay in London.
